Problems

Boson is an autonomous self-driving vehicle which is cost-prohibitive and powerful. It can be used in farms, construction sites and in much more places. It has solar power charging and has the ideal battery for rough terrain. When moving from tree to tree for inspection, reduces time and energy of transportation when the truck follows you. Boson is making clean, autonomous mobility solutions accessible to all.

Overview

The Boson team contacted us to build a HMI for their new launch, an automatic self driving truck. They anticipated that the whole controls should be done by the HMI automatically. But, they also wanted the HMI to be cheap, user-friendly and visually appealing. The HMI should automatically control the whole process of the truck from start to the end. Basically, The HMI should be the heart of the truck. So the main challenge is that the HMI should be at a low cost yet highly efficient.

As a product designer, I was completely responsible for this HMI. I led the whole wireframing and prototyping from inception to execution, working closely with user interface and user experience. Additionally, I created a fully-fledged 3D model with live interactions. I even did a user-testing for this feature with the wireframe created, which checked all the boxes below.

Market Analysis

My Role and Approach


I studied many real-time HMI’s. Also researched Tesla, Wave1, Kia and Samsung’s concept HMI’s and laid the foundation for a user-centric design solution that aims to provide a seamless and better experience for all users.

Solution

After gathering the team’s inputs and requirements, I remodelled their existing 3D truck to an advanced 3D model with live interactions and designed the whole UI/UX of Boson's HMI. With the help of an Android developer, we brainstormed a few ideas on the app’s architect and we did a few researches on how to build a 3D model with live interactions. With the use of many unreal engines and 3d importing engines, I created a 3D model but, as it didn't meet the HMI spec(RAM) issued by the Boson team and since they could not adopt a higher version, finally I came up with the finest solution and converted each 3D frame into PNG format and combined all the frames together with the help of a developer and somehow managed to create a live interactive 3D truck.

When the user enters the app, the onboarding helps them to get better understanding about the vehicle setup. In the home page, the bottom navigation in the HMI helps the users to easily switch between tabs with just a click. In the settings page, the user can easily operate the lights, battery of the vehicle and much more.

Onboarding & Navigation

When create path mode is switched on, it automatically stores the pathway and with the help of an autonomous feature enabled in the vehicle it automatically runs the path in the future without the help of a driver. By using the patrol mode, the user can activate the recorded paths and issue controls when starting the truck. For instance, this feature can be used in farms while supplying water and harvesting or can be used in construction sites for carrying heavy loads in laps.

By activating this mode, the vehicle automatically detects the person wearing an orange vest by using the sensor and follows the person. There is also an additional feature in this mode where the user can control the distance, the truck should follow him. For instance, this feature can also be used in farms while harvesting and much more.
